Getting to Bagni di Lucca by road
From Pisa airport
- Exit airport on left hand side, follow GREEN signs for Autostrade. After toll booth on autostrada, take first right, signed for GENOVA (A12). Exit A12 at first exit, PISA NORD and pick up A11 towards FIRENZE. Exit A11 at LUCCA OVEST.
The following directions are very detailed, however you can ignore all this, and just keep following SS12 for Abetone signs if you find it simpler!
- Exit A11 on right hand side of tollbooths. Head straight on, signed (Blue signs from now) for Bagni di Lucca, Abetone. At McDonalds follow ‘tutte le direzione’. From now on follow signs for SS12 Abetone. When you reach the walls of Lucca, keep the walls on the right, staying on the inside lane if possible. Pass two gateways into Lucca, then after the third gate, Santa Maria, take the right hand junction, signed Abetone/Bagni di Lucca. Move into the left hand lane, ready to take a left at the next roundabout, signed Abetone/Bagni di Lucca. Now go straight on, in right lane if possible, passing lovely liberty style villas, then at junction take a right for Abetone/Bagni di Lucca. You should soon pass a leaving Lucca sign, followed by an SS12 Bagni di Lucca 23km sign. Carry on for a few miles to a big roundabout type junction by the Esselunga supermarket. Go left for Abetone, then head straight on (left when road splits) following signs for SS12 Abetone.
- A few miles after passing the famous ‘Devil’s Bridge’ at Borgo a Mozzano, you’ll enter Bagni di Lucca. After the traffic lights, turn left across the Ponte a Serraglio bridge, then left again. You will have the River Lima on your left, and pass the Casino, now the tourist information office, on the right. Park anywhere on the left, by the river, after the Casino. Villa Rosalena is two minutes walk further on.
- On foot, cross at the zebra crossing and turn into the lane behind the Scoula Materna (nursery school), go through the archway, then left up the slope. Villa Rosalena is the second gate on the right. If the steps look daunting (the view is worth it though!) continue further up the cobbled lane to enter at the gate leading onto the terrace.
(If you have lots of luggage, and a small car, you can drive through the archway to a small piazza to unload-either way, we are very happy to come and meet you in the lane and help with luggage)
From Florence (Firenze)
Take A11 Autostrada direction MARE(Sea)/PISA NORD passing Prato and Pistoia. Exit at LUCCCA EST. Head towards Lucca Centro, then at the walls head north th pick up the SS12 for Abetone. (See 2 above)
From Rome
Take A1 autostrada north to Florence (Firenze), then A11 as for direction from Florence, or A12 coastal route via Grosseto and Livorno. Exit A12 at PISA NORD, then as for from Pisa airport route.
From Milan or Bologna
Take A1 autostrada south towards Firenze, then A11 as for directions from Florence.
